Why A Mudroom Ceiling Light Matters: 7 Examples from Custom Homes

The mudroom may be a hardworking space, but that doesn’t mean it has to be overlooked. From storing coats and shoes to being the first stop when you come home, this space sets the tone for the rest of the house. And one of the simplest ways to elevate it? Choosing the right ceiling light. The right fixture not only provides practical illumination but also adds warmth, personality, and style to a space that could otherwise feel purely utilitarian.

At Meg & Co, we’ve designed and built countless custom homes, and we’ve seen how lighting can transform both mudrooms and laundry rooms. In fact, laundry rooms deserve the same attention—after all, they’re often used just as much as kitchens and hallways. In this article, we’re sharing seven ceiling lights we’ve incorporated into our projects. Each one brings its own personality, and we hope these examples inspire you as you think about lighting your own home.

1. Milton Road Mudroom Ceiling Light

In the mudroom of our most recent Charles project, we chose the Milton Road Pendant/Flush Mount from the Thomas O’Brien Signature Collection for Visual Comfort. With its hand-rubbed antique brass details and 14-inch opaline glass shade, this fixture adds a touch of Art Deco elegance to a practical space. The fluted sides of the milk glass pair beautifully with the subtle stripe wallpaper on the walls, creating a quiet rhythm that ties the whole room together. Combined with the Dutch door, custom cubbies, and the checkered floor, the pendant offers both warmth and timeless style, proof that even utilitarian spaces can feel thoughtfully designed.

2. Dewdrop Semi-Flush Mount Light

For this mudroom, we installed a pair of dewdrop semi-flush mount lights, and they couldn’t be more perfect. With their classic schoolhouse design, each fixture pairs a white opal glass dome with a warm antique bronze finish. The look feels timeless, striking the right balance between vintage charm and everyday practicality. The glass shade casts a soft, welcoming glow that works beautifully in a mudroom but would be just as fitting in a kitchen, hallway, or even bedroom. Simple to install on flat ceilings, this light adds an easy touch of style to any space.

3. Victoria Station Light

The next fixture we used is a stunning replica of the original railway station lights once found on the platforms of London’s Victoria Station before the war. Made of solid brass with copper, it carries an unmistakable sense of history.

You can get them with either clear or opal glass. This piece might be our all-time favorite. It offers versatility while staying true to its antique roots. The brass finish adds warmth and character, making it a great choice for those who love vintage details in their homes.

We placed three of these lights in the hallway of a home that was showcased in the Magic Valley Parade of Homes in the summer of 2025. They were an absolute standout feature. While they looked incredible in the hallway, they’d also be right at home in a mudroom or laundry room—spaces where durable, classic lighting makes all the difference.

4. Modern Conical Semi-Flush Mount

Next on our list is the Conical Semi-Flush Mount from Rejuvenation, finished in oil-rubbed bronze with a crisp white shade. Part of the Conical Drum Collection, this fixture is all about balance. Its bold, oversized form makes a statement and the clean lines and linen shade keep the look light and airy. The result is a piece that feels both casual and refined, perfect for everyday living spaces.

We installed this fixture in a laundry room where it tied everything together beautifully. Paired with a black faucet and black hardware, the oil-rubbed bronze finish felt right at home, adding contrast without overwhelming the space. It’s an excellent choice for ambient lighting in rooms where you want a polished feel.

5. Mid Century Semi Flush Mount Ceiling Light

For this hallway, we went with a set of three Mid-Century Style Brass Globe Ceiling Lights, a retro-inspired design that’s become a favorite in mudrooms, laundry rooms, and beyond. Measuring seven inches across, this fixture pairs a sleek metal base, available in black or gold, with a glowing opal glass globe. The globe seems to float within its streamlined frame, striking the perfect balance between modern simplicity and vintage charm.

The soft, diffused light makes it especially inviting in transitional spaces like hallways, where you want brightness without harshness. In this home, the trio of globe lights created a great flow down the corridor, tying the space together with warmth.

6. Modern Flush Mount Ceiling Light in Aged Brass

We installed four of these modern flush mounts in a row across the mudroom ceiling, where their curved metal bases open into a wide mouth that secures to the domed glass covers. The contemporary silhouette strikes the perfect balance—more pronounced than standard flush mounts yet more minimal than a chandelier—making it an ideal mudroom ceiling light for a transitional space. The brass finish complements the gold door handles, while the warm glow adds to the beauty of the rich wood floors. The result is a cohesive and stunning space.

Since this mudroom also functions as a hallway leading to the dining room and bathroom, we installed four modern flush-mount ceiling lights in a row. This creates a sense of rhythm and even illumination along the entire passage. In many homes, a single fixture would be enough — and this design looks just as striking on its own.

7. Stylish Modern Schoolhouse Globe Light

Another favorite is the Stylish Modern Schoolhouse Globe Pendant Light, which showcases an authentic antique globe design dating back to the 1930s. With its elegant milk glass shade and rubbed bronze finish, this fixture brings a timeless vintage charm that feels both familiar and fresh.

Traditionally seen over kitchen sinks or as a unique accent in bathrooms, the schoolhouse style has made a strong comeback thanks to its blend of character and versatility. While this particular piece is shown as a pendant, it’s also available in a semi-flush option, making it adaptable for different ceiling heights and room layouts—an excellent choice if you’re searching for a classic mudroom ceiling light.

We love it as a laundry room fixture, too—where the soft, diffused glow provides plenty of light without feeling harsh, and the retro silhouette adds a touch of personality to a hardworking space.

At Meg & Co, our goal is always the same: to design homes that feel perfectly tailored to our clients while inspiring others along the way. Even something as simple as the right ceiling light can make a big difference in the way your mudroom or laundry room looks and functions.

If you’re in the process of choosing a fixture for your own home, we hope these examples have sparked some ideas. Whether you’re drawn to vintage charm, modern simplicity, or something in between, the right light has the power to bring personality and purpose to these hardworking spaces.
