When it comes to doing laundry, there are many steps involved: separating whites and colors, setting up a proper temperature, buying a good detergent, loading and unloading machines, folding and hanging everything. To many of us, it is not the most exciting task, but it doesn’t matter because it is not going away! The only exciting part about it is a fun space you might get to do it in—a properly designed and organized laundry room.
In this blog, we will share 6 smart laundry room design ideas we created and brought to life. We will walk you through the layouts, color palettes, decorative items, countertops, and cabinetry we chose and explain the whys behind those.
1. Laundry Room Design: Quartz Countertop and Wood Floors
When designing a laundry room, consider incorporating a white quartz countertop for a clean and modern look. Pair it with warm wood floors. Light grey cabinets can help create an airy feel, while a stylish chrome faucet adds a contemporary touch. We chose a cool color palette for our Parker project. Our finishing touches were decorative elements like fresh lavender in a vase and a beautifully framed oil painting.
Although consistent and effective, liquid laundry detergents always come in loud packaging that can be very busy and overwhelming. That’s why your cabinets come in handy, or you can store laundry pads and dryer balls in clear glass containers for that aesthetic and appealing look.
2. Laundry Room: Add Floating Shelves
Creating a beautiful luxury laundry room design starts with choosing a classic color palette. When designing our Hayden project, we paired off-white cabinets with white oak floating shelves for an elegant touch. We incorporated rustic brick herringbone tile to add a unique accent to the floor, complementing dark units and a black countertop. Our recessed lighting and abundant natural light pouring into this particular laundry room help prevent the typical melancholic atmosphere that comes with washing and drying clothes.
In a modest laundry room, every inch counts, so maximizing space is essential. Remember, proper lighting and neutral colors can make any space feel larger and more inviting, while a pop of fun tile can add a touch of personality.
A well-designed laundry area will make the chore more enjoyable and add value to your home.
3. Laundry Room Design: Combine it with Mudroom
If you are considering a new laundry room design, it might have crossed your mind to combine it with a mudroom. Laundry and mudrooms always go hand in hand. They fulfill similar functions of storing items we don’t want in any other part of the house, things we use a lot but don’t want to be displayed or seen.
So if that is an option you will choose to pursue, focus on smart storage solutions that fit your style and space. A lovely backsplash with a small sink can add a nice touch and make cleaning a breeze.

4. Keep Laundry Behind Closed Doors
When working with a custom home builder to remodel your laundry room, consider a layout that integrates functionality and aesthetics, keeping your laundry behind closed doors.
Take a look at this picture with a space where two laundry units are flush-installed into custom cabinetry, creating a seamless look. It’s our McRae Project.
Below the units, two pull-out drawers offer convenient storage for detergents and cleaning supplies, while cabinetry above keeps less-used items out of sight but within reach.
Floating shelves provide a stylish way to display decor or store essentials, complemented by a hanging rod perfect for air-drying garments. A beautiful butcher block corner countertop that extends along another wall, offering ample space for folding laundry or tackling household projects. This thoughtful design not only enhances the aesthetics of your home but also uses space wisely and transforms the laundry room into a more enjoyable space.
We completed the look with two sleek flush mount light fixtures that illuminate the room beautifully.
5. Smart Laundry Room Design: Install Cabinets above Units
This stunning laundry room at our Smalley project features a sleek drying rack and multiple sets of cabinets installed above the units, providing both functionality and style. The chic black herringbone tile adds a sophisticated touch, creating a cohesive and elegant ensemble. Together, these elements transform the space into a stylish and efficient area for all your laundry needs.
6. Luxury Laundry Room Design: Stack Your Units
If you have a compact laundry room, stacking units is a great idea. By choosing front-loading machines, you can efficiently stack them, freeing up valuable floor space for cabinetry, a drying rod, or a larger sink. The average dimensions of stacked units are 78-80”.
To sum it up, a stacked setup creates a more functional and aesthetically pleasing laundry area. This design adds that valuable visual height to your laundry room and is clean and organized! Choosing compact, multi-functional appliances and hardware will ensure efficiency in this small yet vital area of the home.
In conclusion, choosing a smart laundry room design idea for your space will transform a mundane task of doing laundry into a fun experience. Spaces where we spend time have the power to inspire us. We hope these six luxury laundry room design ideas, give your direction and guidance in where to start.
