Interior Design and Symmetrical Balance

Balance is a key principle in interior design that can transform any space into a cohesive and visually pleasing environment. Let’s talk about three main approaches that will bring balance and harmony to any space. Symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial balance each offer unique ways to create visual stability and structure in any room.

Symmetrical balance in interior design provides a classic, formal feel with evenly distributed elements, while asymmetrical balance adds a dynamic, modern touch by balancing different objects. Radial balance, on the other hand, draws attention to a central focal point, creating a sense of flow and movement. In this blog, we’ll explore these three types of balance and share how we incorporate them into the homes we design at Meg & Co. to inspire beautiful, well-balanced spaces.

Symmetrical Balance

Symmetrical balance is one of the key principles of interior design, offering a sense of order and harmony that naturally appeals to those drawn to classic, structured aesthetics. What sets symmetrical balance apart is its focus on mirroring objects on either side of a central axis to create visual equilibrium. This technique delivers a proper and cohesive look, making it a popular choice for spaces where order and tradition are valued.

To apply this principle, start by identifying a focal point in the room, such as a fireplace, bed, or dining table. From there, imagine a central axis and arrange furniture and decor symmetrically on either side. Items like mirrors, lighting, chairs, and other furniture work well for this technique.

While symmetry adds structure, it’s crucial not to overdo it, as excessive repetition can lead to a predictable and uninspiring space. Instead, strike a balance between symmetry and creativity by incorporating fresh and new elements to keep the design dynamic and engaging.

Asymmetrical Balance

Asymmetrical balance in interior design is a fun and creative approach, but it’s also more challenging than symmetrical balance. Unlike symmetry, which relies on repeating identical elements for a balanced look, asymmetry requires careful thought and imagination. It’s all about distributing visual weight across a space in a way that feels balanced yet unexpected.

Achieving asymmetry takes more effort because you need a diverse mix of decor items rather than simply repeating the same ones. It demands an eye for detail and a willingness to experiment with different shapes, sizes, and placements. However, the reward is worth it—spaces designed with asymmetrical balance feel unique, dynamic, and full of character.

This approach adds an element of surprise and intrigue to a room, steering clear of the rigidity and formality of symmetrical layouts. For example, we applied asymmetrical balance to a fireplace in the bedroom, laundry room, and office. The results brought a fresh, playful energy to each space while still maintaining harmony. It’s a fun way to design with personality!

Radial Balance

Now that we’ve explored symmetrical and asymmetrical design, let’s dive into a final approach: radial balance. This approach is less implemented however, rather effective.

It is a technique that creates harmony by focusing on a central point and designing outward from it, making it perfect for spaces that need a striking focal centerpiece. Think of rooms with spiral staircases, rounded couches, circular chandeliers etc.

Our example is this dining room where the table serves as the central point. To reinforce it, we paired it with a modern sculptural brass suspension light. This combination instantly elevates the room, creating a balanced yet visually dramatic effect. Radial balance draws the eye toward the center, making the space feel cohesive and inviting.

You’ve likely seen radial balance used in grand spaces like hotels, theaters, banquet halls, or country clubs. These venues often design around focal points like statement chandeliers or circular seating arrangements, resulting in a stunning and elegant atmosphere. If your space allows, radial balance can be an exceptional choice, adding a sense of unexpected intentionality.
