Meg & Co. Designer Homes is proud to be a member of the Artisan Builder Collective, a group of luxury home builders from across the country committed to learning from one another and continually improving the custom home-building experience. Twice a year, we gather in a different region to tour each other’s projects, meet each other’s teams, and share insights into how we run our businesses. 

The goal is simple: we learn from one another so every one of us builds better. 

Being part of this builder networking group has been one of the most valuable investments I’ve ever made in my business. The relationships, knowledge, and accountability that come from surrounding myself with some of the best luxury construction professionals in the country help me become a better builder, leader, and partner for our clients. 

As I often say, there has been no greater investment in my business than being part of this collective.

This spring, our Artisan Builder Collective meeting took us to Charleston, South Carolina, where we spent the week learning from Adam and Ben, the owners of CopeGrand Homes. They are two of the most inspiring builders I know. Their commitment to quality extends far beyond construction. They care deeply about the quality of their work, the quality of their client relationships, and the quality of the lives they are creating for the families they serve.

Their construction knowledge is exceptional, and their mastery of Buildertrend is among the best I’ve seen. What stood out most to me, however, was how intentionally they choose the clients they work with and how committed they are to building strong relationships throughout the process.

If you want an organized, up-front builder who truly cares about you and your project, CopeGrand Homes is the epitome of that. Their approach reinforced something we value deeply at Meg & Co.: the best projects happen when builders and homeowners genuinely enjoy working together and share a vision for the home they are creating.

A Week of Learning in Charleston

Charleston completely stole my heart.

The architecture is stunning, the people are incredibly kind, the food is unforgettable, and there always seemed to be Dixieland music playing somewhere in the background. Between home tours and business discussions, we spent time exploring the city’s historic streets and admiring the craftsmanship that makes Charleston so unique. We also made sure to keep a respectful distance from the alligators — or crocodiles, though I’m still fairly certain they were alligators.

One of my favorite moments of the week happened during an evening boat ride with the group. We spent hours talking about our businesses, sharing what was working well, discussing challenges, and brainstorming ways we could continue helping one another grow. Those conversations are one of the most valuable parts of being involved in the Artisan Builder Collective.

A particularly meaningful highlight for me was revisiting one of the homes on our tour. I had actually seen the project last summer while it was still under construction. Returning this year and seeing the completed home was incredible. Watching the progression, from the challenges they were working through at the time to the beautifully finished residence it became, was a powerful reminder of what thoughtful custom home building can achieve.

Several aspects of CopeGrand Homes’ process stood out during our visits:

• Designing for Real Life: Every decision is made with the homeowner’s daily life in mind. They think through the smallest details, including practical considerations many people would never notice, such as where a homeowner’s favorite potted plants will drain.
• Attention to Quality Control: Their team is meticulous about identifying and correcting issues before they become problems. Thorough blue-tape walkthroughs and detailed inspections help ensure every home meets their exceptionally high standards. 
• Protecting Materials and Finishes: They are intentional about how materials are stored on-site and how completed work is protected through construction. These practices preserve quality and reduce unnecessary damage and delays. 
• Organized Job Sites: Their job sites are some of the cleanest and most organized I have ever seen. An organized site creates efficiency, prevents lost materials, and helps protect the investment clients are making in their homes.
• Exceptional Communications: They prioritize communication with both clients and trade partners and carefully document every step of the building process. That level of organization helps projects run smoothly and creates a better experience for everyone involved.

How These Home-Building Experiences Benefit Our Clients

Experiences like these directly impact the homes we build and the service we provide.

Every time I spend a week learning alongside other luxury home builders, I return with new ideas, improved systems, and a deeper understanding of what clients need throughout the building process. I become a more organized builder, a clearer communicator, and a stronger advocate for our clients.

These trips also provide valuable exposure to new construction techniques, innovative products, and best practices being implemented by some of the most respected custom home builders in the country. That knowledge allows us to continually refine our processes and ensure that the homes we build remain among the best-built homes available today.

Just as importantly, these experiences raise our standards. They challenge us to think critically about job-site cleanliness, site protection, communication systems, quality control, and overall client experience. That accountability ultimately protects both the home itself and the people trusting us to build it.

Building Better Through Collaboration

While the home tours and relationship-building are incredible, our spring Artisan Builder Collective meeting also includes something equally important: financial accountability.

Once we step into the boardroom, the focus shifts to the numbers. We take a deep look at how our businesses are performing and how effectively we are serving our clients. Part of being a member of this group is maintaining strong financial systems, detailed reporting, and a commitment to transparency.

It’s not always easy work, but it is absolutely worth it.

This level of accountability helps Meg & Co. continue improving year after year. It pushes us to refine our systems, strengthen our business, and create better experiences for our clients and trade partners.

I am overwhelmingly grateful for the other members of the Artisan Builder Collective and everything they continue to teach me. The best homes come from builders who never stop learning and who are willing to learn from one another.
