Console Table Decor

Having originated in 17th century in France, console tables have gone through a lot of development and transformation. You might know, that console tables were used as decorative pieces of furniture and that was their sole purpose. They came with matching stools, chairs and even mirrors. If you have been to the Louvre, you know exactly what we are describing.

In the modern home decor in 2025 console tables come with a lot more purpose and function than they did four centuries ago. We will take you on the console table decor journey and will share the examples of our recent projects. Use this step-by-step guide to create a beautiful ambience that is personal and adjust it accordingly as seasons change.

Choose Table Location

Let’s start with the placement of your console table. The most common location of the console table in the home is entryway and hallway.

Remember that hallways are those transitional spaces in our home that are connecting different rooms. Since the main purpose of the hallway is to provide access to another area or room in the house, think about a narrow and not bulky console table, as this is your high traffic area and you don’t want it to be a barrier.

We don’t know about you but when we think of transition we think smooth. The same concept is true in interior design. When decorating a transitional space like hallway, prioritize subtle design and neutral color palette. In general, hallways thrive on great lighting and art work.

Define Zones with Console Tables

Entryway is a welcome zone of your home. In the entryway, console table is a first piece of furniture that will be seen when entering the house. It is that introduction to your whole house, so you have to be strategic. Entryway tables, foot or so in depth, can be at times hard to decorate.

Is there a wall in your living room that is not utilized and feels very empty? That would be a perfect location for a console table. In fact, it will help you define zones within the room and create space for storage and display. In no time at all, all your remotes and ipads will have a home.

As you will see in pictures below, at Meg & Co, we tend to lean into intentional design which results in minimalism and decor with purpose. Choosing quality over quantity, pursuing items that fall right within your overall house style and taste parameters would be our main advice. Let’s decorate!

Start Decorating with Key Items

When it comes to entryway tables and console tables and their decor, think symmetrical and asymmetrical balance. It is a simple design principle that guides us when we create beautiful spaces. In this case, when decorating your console table think mirrors, lamps, jars and bowls. Those will always be your best friends.

Mirrors expand every place they inhabit, so that is where we recommend you begin your console table decor journey. Lamps create intentional mood lighting and jars and bowls are there to balance your lamp off. This is a quick and simple starting point.

Focus on Shapes and Sizes to Create Balance

When it comes to interior design, shapes and sizes are key. From furniture pieces and chandeliers to console table decor accessories and rugs, shapes, and sizes are key to creating a visual balance and achieving a stunning look.

When you start collecting and purchasing your main objects for the console table think about sizes. Start with the most substantial one and slowly scale down. Be careful so you don’t end up with all the decor items being the same height, because it will create a challenge for you when you start layering.

Console Table Decor in the Living Room

Take a look at this French country inspired whitewash wood console table in the living room. This stunning build with an open floor plan is visually defined only by the vaulted ceiling. So in order to reinforce the zone separation we went ahead and placed this console table there.

We balanced this rectangular table with a round mirror adding dimension and depth and chose a textured lamp and a white terracota pot for visual balance.

Hallway Console Table Decor

As we mentioned earlier, hallway console tables need to be narrow, even petite if you would. Careful zone definition and minimal decor is the goal we are looking to achieve. The functional role that your table might play here is small item storage. Clean lines of our black table are complimented by a sandblasted stone finish with black matte stain. This unique lamp won’t go unnoticed as its’ design draws inspiration from the classic shapes of the Italian Renaissance balusters.

In order to maintain design consistency, we paired the lamp with this gorgeous female bust garden planter, referencing the classic design of ancient Greek and Roman female statues.

Entryway Console Table Decor

This rustic provincial natural wood console table is paired with a large, centered piece of art, which creates a striking focal point for the entryway. Yet, to complete the look, we added a vase and a decorative bowl for keys and gloves, creating a convenient drop zone for guests. Notice the fringed two ottomans we placed underneath. They are easily removed if extra seating is needed elsewhere.

In addition, other decor techniques include layering smaller items like candles, books, or sculptures to add visual interest, or incorporating greenery for a fresh, inviting feel. Console tables are versatile and can be styled to suit any aesthetic while offering both form and function.

Decorate with Art

To create a visually striking console arrangement, choose an art piece that anchors the wall behind it. This could be a large-scale landscape, or a bold abstract work. Make sure the frame is a few inches narrower than your table on both sides to maintain balance and prevent the setup from feeling heavy.

Alternatively, consider using multiple pieces and layering them. The key is to create a cohesive focal point that sets the tone for the rest of your arrangement.

Decorate with Plants and Branches

Either dry branches or greenery, bringing nature indoors is a wonderful way to decorate and liven things up. This powder-coated Roman vase, grandiose mirror and upholstered ottomans in harmony complete the look of the console table.

Adding greenery is a simple yet effective way to elevate your console table decor. Plants bring a touch of nature indoors, creating a calming and inviting atmosphere. Pair your greenery with a console table made from natural wood or featuring organic details for a cohesive, earthy look.

Decorate with Pottery and Lamps

Pottery is a versatile and stylish way to decorate your console table, adding character and charm to your space. With a variety of shapes, styles, and forms, pottery can complement any design aesthetic, from minimalist to rustic. Beyond its decorative appeal, pottery is also functional—it can hold flowers, keys, or other small items while keeping your table organized and visually appealing.

We are adding a white terracota vase, that has traditional style and antique finish to the table first with five stems of faux cherry blossoms on the far right. To balance off the weight of the vase, we will place a large ceramic beehive lamp on the far left. To add height and asymmetrical balance, we will simply place a stack of books under the lamp. To complete our look we are adding an european style neo-classical bust of a young woman.
