Freestanding tubs are most commonly placed in the primary bathroom, where there’s usually enough space to make the tub a focal point. They’re both functional and visually striking, adding a spa-like feel to any home.

At Meg & Co, we’ve seen a growing number of our clients gravitate toward 54–59 inch acrylic tubs, mostly in oval and sometimes in rectangular shapes. In our recently completed custom homes throughout Twin Falls, Idaho, these tubs have become standout features in beautifully designed, light-filled bathrooms—often positioned near large windows to take full advantage of natural light.

1. Stylish and Practical Backdrop

If your freestanding tub is placed near a wall, tile becomes an essential design element—serving both form and function. In this bathroom, we installed a sleek tile wall behind the tub to protect against water splashes. It’s a smart solution that also adds to the overall aesthetic of the space.

In this particular layout, we used a floor-mounted freestanding tub faucet with a hand shower. Since there’s no deck or ledge to catch water, the tile plays an even more important role in keeping the wall protected. Freestanding tub faucet placement is a detail we plan with care, it impacts not just functionality, but the balance and flow of the room.

To complete the look, we added a bold, six-arm modern brass chandelier above the tub. Crafted from durable materials and finished in a warm metallic tone, it anchors the space and adds a striking sculptural element.

2. A Statement Light Fixture Above The Freestanding Tub

Don’t Be Afraid to Go Bold with Lighting. A statement light fixture above the tub is one of the easiest ways to elevate your bathroom design. Whether it’s a classic chandelier or a sleek modern pendant, the right lighting adds a sense of drama, elegance, and intentionality to the space.

In this project, we installed the Townsend Four Light Pendant in Warm Brass, a bold yet timeless piece that adds warmth and architectural interest above the tub. It draws the eye upward and helps define the tub as the focal point of the room.

Just below, we used a chrome freestanding tub faucet with a hand shower. This is a great example of mixing finishes in a bathroom—the warm brass pendant and chrome faucet work together beautifully, creating visual contrast while still feeling cohesive. (We wrote a full blog on how to mix metals in your home, which you can read here.)

Freestanding tub faucet placement continues to be a key design element in this room. Positioned on the floor, it maintains an open, spacious look and allows the tub to remain the centerpiece—surrounded by thoughtful, layered design choices.

3. Architectural Details That Elevate the Space

In this project, a few thoughtful design choices come together to create a truly refined and inviting bath alcove. The arched opening is a standout feature—adding softness and architectural interest to the space. Not every home can accommodate an arch structurally, but when possible, it’s a beautiful way to frame the tub and set the area apart as its own calming retreat.

Just beyond the arch, built-in shelving is tucked into the wall—an elegant and practical touch that keeps everyday essentials like shampoo and conditioner close at hand, without cluttering the space.

Surrounding the tub, you’ll also notice classic wall paneling, which adds texture, dimension, and a tailored finish to the room. Every detail here brings in a feeling of intentional luxury.

The space also includes a floor-mounted freestanding tub faucet with hand shower in polished nickel—perfectly placed in front of a large window to take full advantage of natural light. The pairing of nickel fixtures with a warm brass pendant above is another example of successful metal mixing, creating subtle contrast and visual depth.

3. Keep It Minimal, but Thoughtful

When it comes to styling the area around your freestanding tub, less is often more. A small stool or side table is a great addition—not just as a visual accent, but as a practical place to keep bath essentials like a candle, book, or bath salts close by. To avoid overcrowding, we recommend skipping extra furniture and instead installing hooks or a towel bar on either side of the tub. It’s a simple way to keep robes and towels within reach.

In this particular bathroom, the tub is placed beneath a large window, bringing in beautiful natural light. If privacy is a concern, frosted glass or soft linen shades are great solutions that maintain the airy, spa-like feel.

It’s also worth noting that this space features a chrome deck-mounted freestanding tub faucet. The placement works great with the tub’s location and the overall layout. Freestanding tub faucet placement can vary depending on the space and still look intentional and balanced.

4. Rectangular Freestanding Bathtub

This bathroom features clean lines and strong contrast. Relying on a modern layout with a sleek rectangular freestanding tub positioned directly in front of three narrow vertical windows. The tub’s crisp silhouette complements the geometry of the windows, creating a minimalist and modern focal point.

Here, we used a floor-mounted freestanding tub faucet with a hand shower in matte black. Its placement on the right side of the tub keeps the design feeling balanced, especially since the walk-in shower with classic white subway tile sits just to the right. The black finish ties in beautifully with the three black hooks installed on the left wall.

Designing a luxury bathroom with a freestanding tub involves more than choosing a beautiful tub. It’s about thoughtfully layering design and function to create a space that feels both personal and elevated. Homeowners will need to consider several important decisions along the way: rectangular vs. oval tubs, the placement of the freestanding tub faucet, and whether to go with a floor-mounted, wall-mounted, or deck-mounted fixture.

Oval vs Rectangular Tubs, Explained

Choose a tub shape that suits your space. Oval tubs (like the ones in many of our projects) offer a softer, more traditional look. For a more modern feel, rectangular or sculptural tubs can add a striking edge and bring a contemporary note to your bathroom.

Other details—like selecting the right tile backdrop, deciding on proximity to a window for natural light, and choosing a statement light fixture above the tub—all contribute to the final look and feel of the space. And of course, knowing how to mix metals intentionally (like pairing a warm brass pendant with a nickel or black faucet) can pull the entire design together in a subtle but impactful way.

At Meg & Co, we don’t just design bathrooms—we bring custom homes to life. If you’re building in Twin Falls, Idaho, and looking for a team who can help you think through every detail—from the layout to the final finish—we’d love to hear from you. Let’s build something beautiful together.
