The kitchen might be the heart of the home, but the dining room is where we gather over dinners, catch up with loved ones, and celebrate life’s moments. More than just a place for meals, this space sets the stage for great food, good company, and meaningful conversations. It deserves the same level of design attention as any other room in your home.

At Meg & Co, we’ve noticed dining rooms taking on a fresh blend of bold lighting, architectural details, and high-quality furniture this year. From sconces that cast a soft, inviting glow to statement chandeliers that act as sculptural focal points, lighting is leading the way. Add in elements like minimalist wainscoting, which brings polish and texture, and thoughtfully chosen furnishings that balance comfort with style, and you’ve got a recipe for a truly unforgettable dining experience.

1. Add Wainscoting Panels

Wainscoting is the best architectural feature for a dining room design. It’s the fastest way to add character and style to the space where you gather and entertain. We’ve installed minimalist wainscoting at our Clifford project, and the transformation was instant. The streamlined panels brought polish and balance to the walls, giving the room a refined, formal look while still feeling inviting.

Traditionally used to protect walls, wainscoting is now celebrated for the texture and architectural depth it adds. It can be crafted from solid wood for timeless durability or MDF for a budget-friendly, smooth finish. Also, PVC offers a low-maintenance option. Wainscoting is truly a versatile way to add to your dining room design. And there are so many fun options to play with: raised paneling, flat or shaker designs, beadboard, or classic tongue-and-groove styles.

2. Source a Beautiful Chandelier

No dining room feels complete without a chandelier that makes a statement. The right piece doesn’t just illuminate the room—it sets the tone for the entire space. Lately, we’ve been loving chandeliers that combine the industrial look of metal cages with the traditional charm of linear designs. The result is a fixture that’s both modern and classic, with a unique edge that immediately draws the eye.

One of the main benefits of statement cage linear chandeliers is their ability to create a big impact while keeping the look clean and balanced. The open cage design maximizes light output while adding an architectural element that elevates the overall design. These fixtures are especially well-suited for long and narrow spaces—think corridors, kitchens, or dining rooms—where their linear shape naturally elongates the room and brings in a sense of symmetry.

What makes this style so versatile is its balance of scale and openness. The chandelier has a substantial presence, but because of its airy, see-through frame, it never overwhelms the space. No matter the size, the design feels light, sculptural, and refined—perfect for a dining room where you want drama without heaviness.

3. Invest in High Quality Furniture

When it comes to creating the perfect dining room, furniture is one area where quality truly matters. We’re well past the days of “fast furniture”—this is the era of pieces that are built to last. Think of your dining table and chairs not as items that simply fill a space. They are investments in the way you live and gather.

Solid wood remains our top choice for tables and chairs. It’s timeless, durable, and brings a natural warmth to the room. And don’t be afraid to incorporate other materials that add interest and texture. Stone, concrete, or other handmade pieces can introduce a sense of artistry and strength. This thoughtful mix gives your dining room design depth and personality. And those long-lasting materials can truly ensure that every piece is sturdy and functional.

Proportion and scale are equally important. The height of the table, the width of the chairs, and the overall size of the furniture should all work together to create a comfortable, balanced setting. The goal is to allow plenty of space for movement and conversation—without anyone feeling crowded or bumping elbows at dinner. When furniture is thoughtfully selected, it will look incredible and the gathering will feel more enjoyable.

4. Install Statement Sconces

Sometimes it’s the subtle details that make the biggest impact. In this dining room, a pair of delicate wall sconces add balance and warmth without overwhelming the design. Their placement feels intentional, framing the room with soft ambient light and complementing the larger chandelier above the table.

Sconces themselves have a fascinating history. They originated in ancient times, often crafted from metal to hold oil lamps and torches in castles and temples. By medieval Europe, they became more common in private spaces like homes and churches, where candle sconces—often carved from wood, gilt, or intricate metals—brought both light and artistry to interiors. In formal dining rooms, they were traditionally hung in symmetrical pairs to enhance design harmony and intensify light, sometimes using mirrors or polished metal reflectors to spread the glow.

The 20th century saw another revival with the invention of electric lighting. Art Deco and Modernism introduced new materials and sleek forms, making sconces a design feature. Today, they remain an essential part of dining room design. They provide ambient lighting and add architectural accents that enrich the overall atmosphere with style.

In this project, we chose sconces with restraint: delicate, refined, and perfectly scaled to the wall panels. They highlight the minimalist wainscoting and beautifully balance the strong lines of the chandelier. Moreover, they add just enough glow to make the room feel inviting.
