How to Use Modern Wall Sconces for Beautiful, Balanced Lighting

It’s no secret that wall sconces need to be used with intention. Their placement should match the purpose they serve and the direction of light they provide. Because most sconces function as task lighting, they need to support the activity in the space—whether that’s reading, cooking, or creating a soft ambient glow. For general or ambient lighting, aim to install them about 60–65 inches from the floor to cast an even, beautiful light.

In this blog, we at Meg & Co will share five of our favorite spaces where sconces bring both function and style, offering ideas to inspire your own lighting plan.

1. Light Up the Staircase

Stairways are more than a path between floors—they’re a chance to create atmosphere and guide the eye. Wall sconces serve the practical purpose and add beauty, providing safe passage while highlighting architectural details.

In our Charles project, sconces are placed at the base of the stairwell, casting light as you make the 180-degree turn and climb upward. Their glow travels in the same direction as the natural light streaming from the adjacent window, creating a soft transition from day to night.

For the Boer project, we installed a series of four sconces that march upward with the staircase. Aligned with the narrow vertical windows, they echo the rhythm of the architecture while evenly illuminating the entire flight. The result is a space that feels bright, balanced, and thoughtfully designed—proof that well-planned lighting can transform a simple staircase into a design moment.

2. Modern Wall Scones For Wet Bars & Butler’s Pantries

Wet bars and butler’s pantries may be smaller in size, but they can make a big design statement, especially when framed with a pair of sconces. Symmetrical lighting instantly elevates these hardworking spaces, highlighting the cabinetry and countertop while creating a warm, welcoming glow.

Sconces in a wet or dry bar—or even a tucked-away scullery kitchen—aren’t just decorative. They add essential task lighting, brightening the countertop for late-night chopping, cooking or drink prep when overhead lights feel too harsh.

Also remember, when selecting sconces for the entire home, stick to a theme rather than matching every fixture. You might be drawn to brass finishes, milk-glass globes, or classic shades—and that’s perfectly fine. Sconces don’t have to be twins, but they can be siblings, echoing the same vibe, material, shape and finish from room to room. It is fun repeating these subtle motifs in dining rooms, music rooms, offices, bathrooms, and hallways to create a cohesive yet personal lighting story.

3. Cozy Corner Wall Sconce

Small spaces can shine when the lighting is thoughtful. In this sloped-ceiling reading nook, a single window sets the stage, but the real magic comes from the wall sconces. Adjustable floor lamps or side table lamps would work, but sconces feel more elegant and free up valuable floor space—perfect for tucking in a chair or creating a play area.

Mounted higher on the wall, these sconces eliminate the need for excessive overhead lighting while creating a soft, intimate ambience that’s ideal for reading or relaxing. The wallpaper adds a playful pattern that keeps the room lively, while custom built-ins hold baskets and books.

At Meg & Co, we love using sconces in small offices, playrooms, or attic nooks to add character and save space.

4. Bathroom Wall Sconce Lights

Lighting can completely transform a bathroom, making even the smallest space feel larger and more inviting. Wall sconces are especially powerful because they provide soft, layered light that highlights architectural details and creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Sconces can be placed in many ways: above the mirror for overall illumination, flanking the mirror to eliminate shadows, or mounted on either side of a vanity for a balanced glow. In our project shown here, a single sconce frames the dark walnut custom cabinetry, drawing attention to the rich wood tones while adding just the right amount of light.

5. Fireplace Wall Sconces

Adding sconces above a mantel instantly introduces height and balance. By flanking a mirror or a favorite piece of artwork, sconces create vertical interest and naturally draw the eye upward, turning the fireplace into a true focal point.

For the best look, place each fixture about 6 to 8 inches above the mantel or at a height that complements the proportions of your wall. Keep the spacing symmetrical if you’re using a pair, and consider layering mirrors or artwork for extra dimension. At Meg & Co, we love how this simple addition can transform a living room from ordinary to striking, all while providing a warm, welcoming glow.

Bringing It All Together

Thoughtful lighting is one of the most powerful tools in home design. The right mix of task and ambient lighting doesn’t just brighten a room—it shapes the way you experience it. From sconces that illuminate a staircase to fixtures that frame a mantel or highlight a wet bar, every placement adds depth, function, and mood.

Creating a cohesive plan is key. When selecting sconces for the entire home, start with a theme—a finish, shape, or detail you love—and let it repeat in subtle ways from room to room. The fixtures don’t have to match perfectly, but they should feel related so the house flows naturally and every space feels connected.
